B ack at our hotel suite, I told Michael about my experience at the women’s clinic. “I felt horrible. I put myself in Becca’s shoes, but after my meeting, I couldn’t wait to get out of there. I’m so relieved I didn’t have to make a decision.”

“I hope you never have to,” Michael said. “I’d love to see you pregnant with our child one day.” He smiled at me.

I looked down, took a sip of my wine.

He took my hand in his. “I’m not pressuring you, Megan. I want you to know that my feelings on the subject haven’t changed.”

The sincerity in his eyes was hard to miss. “I know, but we’ve been through this before. Many times. I’m not ready to remarry, let alone have a baby.”

His voice grew softer. “If my memory serves me right, wanting a baby was on your wish list once upon a time.”

“Yes, I wanted to have children when I was married to Tom, but things have changed since then.”

A flicker of hurt flashed in his eyes. “And how am I supposed to interpret that?”

“Don’t take it personally. It’s my problem. It’s something I have to work out at my end.” I paused. “Though I have to admit that those cute baby pictures at the clinic did stir up something inside me.”

“Aha! There it is. Your maternal instinct is alive and well.” He chuckled with relief.

“I’m only human, you know. It’s easy to imagine how torn Becca must have felt after she left the clinic.”

“Maybe she decided to keep the baby and wanted to share the news with Frank.”

“Or maybe the situation at home was too stressful—financial and otherwise—and she decided not to keep it but wanted to discuss it with Frank first.”

Michael shrugged. “I guess we’ll never know.”
